    The vi–IV–I–V chord progression

vi–IV–I–V is the I–V–vi–IV loop started on its minor chord, which gives it a more serious, minor-sounding feel. In C major it is Am – F – C – G.

    Major or minor?

The chords are those of a major key, but starting and leaning on vi makes the ear hear the relative minor as home. Read in A minor, Am – F – C – G is i–VI–III–VII.
