Accessibility statement
Last updated: September 27, 2026.
We want PlayTheory to be usable by as many people as possible, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader or other assistive technology. This statement explains what works today, what does not work well yet, and how to reach us if something gets in your way.
What you can do today
- Play the lesson piano with your computer keyboard: a row of letter keys works as piano keys (on most keyboard layouts), so you do not need a mouse or touch screen to answer.
- Connect a MIDI keyboard and play lessons on a real instrument.
- Use the app with a screen reader: most buttons, menus and dialogs have text labels, and dialogs can be closed with the Esc key. Some parts are still missing labels (see below).
- Turn on Reduce motion in Settings to calm animations. The app also follows your device's reduced-motion setting where it can.
- Choose a light or dark appearance in Settings.
- Lesson instructions are written on screen, so you can follow a lesson without relying on the spoken narration.
Known limitations
PlayTheory teaches music by listening and playing, so some parts depend on hearing or sight. We are working on the points below, but they are not solved yet:
- Many lesson steps are audio-first or visual-first (for example: hear an interval, or read notes on a staff). Where the sound or picture is the exercise itself, there is not always a text alternative.
- Lesson steps move forward when you play the right notes on the piano at the bottom of the screen; there is no separate Continue button. With the computer-keyboard piano this works without a mouse, but it can be unclear for screen-reader users which notes a step expects.
- A few exercises use dragging (for example, putting items in the right order). These do not always have a keyboard alternative.
- Some small text and some colour-coded elements may not meet contrast guidelines everywhere.
- We have not yet had an independent accessibility audit, and PlayTheory does not yet fully meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA.
